The Southwest region of Florida has always been a popular place for retirement, and more and more retirees are searching for Naples homes to spend the happiest, most relaxed years of their lives.
Forbes magazine included Naples in its Top Twenty-Five Places to Retire list and it’s easy to see why.
With its sunny climate, miles of sandy beaches, shopping and dining, not to mention the world class golf courses, who wouldn’t want to claim their own special piece of the Paradise Coast?
But for many of the retirees heading Naples way, retirement won’t be all long summer days in the garden, or enjoying a round of golf.
According to a new National study Merrill Lynch and Age Wave, many people are choosing to work past their retirement age.
The study surveyed the working habits of more than 7,000 people, including some participants in Naples and Bonita Springs.
Forty percent of people aged 55 and over are still working, and three out of four pre-retirees said that they planned to continue some kind of work as they grow older.
This “new retirement workscape” is comprised of many of the ‘baby boomer’ generation, who seem to be changing the dynamic of retirement by enthusiastically following a lifestyle of work and play.
Some of those surveyed simply needed to keep working for economic reasons.
The recent recession may have had an adverse effect on some people’s finances, or they may still have dependents to care for.
However, those surveyed in Naples chose to work in their retirement years despite having adequate economic provision.
Half of the working retirees surveyed said that they had enjoyed a ‘career intermission’ that lasted on average two and a half years, before returning to some sort of working activity.
These activities included study, volunteer and charity work, as well as paid work.
Many retirees find that they have the time and capital to set up the business they’ve always dreamed of.
Becoming your own boss in your retirement years can give you the freedom to work as much or as little as you want, and to develop those creative juices that may have been dormant for years!
Those questioned during the survey stated that working in their retirement years was a boon as it kept them happier and more mentally active.
It is a well-known fact that physical and mental challenges at this age can guard against diseases such as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
Whether you choose to work in your retirement years, or simply take it easy, you’ll be sure to find your dream Naples real estate to live in.
